- Nitrates enter the ground water through rainfall, sewage, industrial effluent and leachates from agricultural soil.
- Nitrates reduce to nitrites which bond with hemoglobin, not letting the hemoglobin carry oxygen. This has been known to cause trouble for young infants causing a condition known as blue baby syndrome.
- Nitrates can be removed through reverse osmosis as well as ionic exchange with an anionic resin. The pure water from these systems is then combined with the raw water in amounts that keep the nitrates below the maximum contaminant levels (MCL).
